Question

Set-A contains 6 consecutive odd numbers and their average is 38 set-B contains 6 consecutive even numbers and the lowest number of set-B is 27 more than the highest number of set-A.what is the average of the numbers in set-B?

  • A) 55
  • B) 61
  • C) 53
  • D) 57
  • E) 59
Solution

Let the five consecutive odd numbers of set A be x, x+2, x+4, x+6 and x+ 8.

         Then, x+x+2+x+4+x+6+x+8=185

            Or, 5x+20= 185

            Or, 5x=165

            ∴ x=165/5=33

            Hence the highest odd no. =x+8=33+8=41

            Now, the smallest even no. of set B =41+13=54

            Average of four consecutive even nos.of set B = (54+56+58+60)/4=228/4 =57

            Quicker Method:

            Average= (First no. + Last no.)/2=(54+60)/2 =57
